I finished this book last night at 12:30. As in other email comments. My house doesn't become Lord of the flies, My kids become TV Zombies as thats all I can do to get them to leave me alone to READ. I really liked this book. THe time line was a little awkward but not to much to distract from the story.
ReplyDeleteI never do well with dates. I'm always going back and looking at dates so that is one thing I don't like. Otherwise I did like the book. I'm not very good at expressing what I liked or didn't like but I did like this book. Thanks, again, for setting up this site. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved all the rich imagery in The Night Circus. The author really did a nice job letting the reader ENJOY the senses of the circus as though they were there. I thought the intermittent chapters written in the "you" perspective were really neat. It made me feel like I was a part of the whole event.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I think the book could have bee another 300 pages. Right when things were starting to get going, she shuts it down with Tsukuki's interventions and some convenient magical loop holes. I would have enjoyed a more thorough play out of the "game." Like if Celia and Marco decided they hated each other, duked it out, and then regretted it in the final chapter when they realized they did love each other after all but they had already destroyed each other.....
I added one more link at the end of the post that will take you to a brief interview with the author.
ReplyDeleteI obsessively made a timeline for the book and added it to this post as well. Take a look.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have been hesitant to post on here because I read this back in Nov. and it is no longer fresh in my mind. So I have to refer to my post on goodreads. This book was well written and had interesting characters, but I have a hard time reading books that constantly switch between character narration as this book did. Just as you start to get into the events that are occurring with a character, it switches to another one.
ReplyDeleteI also had a hard time with the timeline. It was a little confusing and seemed to detract from the story when I was constantly having to flip back and forth to see what happened when.
I liked the description of the circus, and how original the story was, but the plot needed something more. I have to admit that I had a hard time getting into this book and kept waiting for the story to take off. To pull me in. It was just too easy to put this book down even at the very end. And right when it seemed like the climax was finally going to get exciting. She ends the book. It seemed very anti-climatic at the end.
I agree to an extent about the timeline. It was distracting. I was caught up in the story and didn't want to take time out to read detailed descriptions of the circus and such and sort of skimmed those parts.
DeleteHowever, I picked it up and reread a lot of it over the last couple days and since I already know the story line I found myself enjoying those descriptions and the whole book much more.
I did realize too that she really could not just tell the story chronologically because Bailey, who comes in and saves the day at the end would have made a brief appearance in the middle of the book and then not again until the very end. Plus there's all sorts of talk about how timing is hard to figure out and complex clocks everywhere. So disjointed time is a theme of the book. So, having said all that I think if you reread it it would probably bother you less than it did this first time. And also I found that I liked the characters better the second time around. And I noticed a lot more literary connections and foreshadowing and such that I didn't notice the first time around because I was focused on the plot alone.
It is weird because I wasn't all that impressed with the book the first time around (although I did like it), but it has really grown on me. It is interesting to read and offers a lot of discussion ponts.
